Ah, Rome, my favourite city in the world. There’s something about this city that makes it feel truly magical. It could be the way the sun shines down on its towering buildings, or perhaps the winding, narrow streets that seem to have a story lurking around every corner. For me, it’s the bustling piazzas that really give Rome its cozy charm. There’s nothing quite like sitting in a café, sipping an espresso and people-watching in the heart of the Eternal City.
Despite its size and importance in world history, Rome manages to maintain an intimate feel that I just can’t get enough of. Whether you’re wandering the streets with no particular destination in mind, or making your way to one of the many awe-inspiring historical sites, there’s an undeniable energy that makes this city feel truly special. I’ve been lucky enough to visit the Eternal City two times, and I can’t wait to return again one day.
I have realized that most of my favourite memories from trips aren’t the ones where I’m hustling to tick off all the must-see tourist spots. Instead, it’s those hours spent wandering around a new city, soaking up the sights and sounds, relaxing in cafés and just living in the moment that bring me the most joy. There’s something pretty darn special about getting lost in a new place and stumbling upon hidden gems that aren’t in any guidebook. And stopping for a gelato or coffee break is a must during these wanderings. These experiences become the travel memories that stick with me the most. It’s not always about checking things off a list, but more about the journey and the experiences you have along the way.
One of my favourite experiences in Rome happened just this way. It was a warm, June summer evening with no plan but to wander. We went past the Pantheon, through the Centro Storico, past Piazza Navona, and onto one of my favourite streets in Rome, Via del Governo Vecchio.
Via del Governo Vecchio is a bustling street in the heart of the historic centre of Rome filled with restaurants, bars, and shops. The tall buildings are historic and beautiful, with charming balconies and colourful shutters. The narrow streets are full of tourists and locals, taking in the sights, or running errands. Motorcyclists and scooters dodge the people and tables that spill out from restaurants and bars onto the cobbles.
On this early evening, my husband and I were starving, so we decided to eat dinner before our normal cocktail. We are Canadian after all and usually eat dinner at an ungodly, early hour. We headed to Antica Porchetteria Granieri 1916, a small shop specializing in porchetta, a savoury pork roast that’s a Roman specialty. We ordered the best porchetta sandwiches I’ve ever had, and we sat outside at a tiny table on the street, sipping beers and people-watching. The sandwich was so good, it distracted me and I forgot to take a photo of it. According to Google, this shop location has closed since we enjoyed our meal here. But it looks like a new porchetteria has taken over called Porchetteria la Rinascita. It also also looks delish and has great reviews!
After we finished our sandwich, we walked (literally) across the street to Enoteca il Piccolo for our digestivo. I ordered an Aperol Spritz, and my husband ordered a Negroni. We sat at a small table on the street and watched the crowds pass by while our stomachs digested those hearty sammies.

Even after a fantastic dinner and cocktail that left us feeling full and content, we couldn’t resist the urge for something sweet. So, we decided to head across the street again to Two Sizes, a dessert shop famous for its incredible tiramisu.
Choosing just one flavour was impossible, so we got three – caramel, strawberry, and pistachio. With our delightful dessert trio in hand, we strolled over to Piazza Navona, one of the most beautiful squares in Rome, and found a cozy bench to indulge.
Let me tell you, that tiramisu was on a whole new level of deliciousness. Each flavour was bursting with goodness, and we couldn’t get enough. It was hard to pick a favourite, but I have to say, the strawberry one had a little extra magic that won us over.

Sitting there in the heart of Rome, savouring our dessert, and soaking in the vibrant atmosphere around us, we felt like we were living in a movie scene. It was the perfect way to end our amazing evening in this enchanting city.
Rome is a city that I love more and more each time I visit. It’s a place where history, culture, and food come together in the most beautiful way. But the thing I love most about Rome is the way it makes me feel. There’s something magical about walking down its narrow streets and stumbling upon hidden gems. Even a simple evening, sitting on a bench in a charming piazza, savouring a delicious dessert, can turn into something incredibly special.
Rome has this incredible power of slowing me down, making me appreciate every moment, and reminding me of the beauty in the world. It’s not just about visiting the famous landmarks, but it’s the entire experience of being in this captivating city. That night was truly unforgettable, and I know it’s a memory I’ll always cherish. I can’t wait for my next visit to the Eternal City to experience another perfect evening in Rome.
