Pumpkin pie spice is a mixture that includes cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cloves, and all-spice. It’s the perfect addition to any fall baking recipe or maybe, perhaps, a pumpkin spice latte?

Freshly ground spices kick ass. Usually I don’t bother to grind my spices but there’s something about whole nutmeg that is magical. It looks like a little brown egg about half the size of your thumb. It grates beautifully using a zester or small cheese grater. The fragrance and flavour of freshly ground nutmeg is killer. I would highly recommend seeking this out if you feel ambitious, but of course you can always buy ground nutmeg and it would also be delish.

Pro tip: Bulk Barn in my favourite store to buy spices. They have a huge selection and it’s so nice to be able to buy exactly what you need. Lots grocery stores have a decent bulk spice selection too or check out your local bulk store.

Pumpkin Pie Spice

No need to buy pricy pre-mixed pumpkin pie spice in the store – make it yourself with just staple spices*. I keep a container of this on hand during the fall and winter season when I am craving those pumpkin recipes. It is also great to add to coffee (PSL anyone??) or hot chocolate for a spicy kick.
